I'm so pleased I found your blog! You have a really distinct "flavor" of photography and I like your perspective. I like to carry my Nikon D40 around but sometimes I feel awkward taking candid photos of people because I think they'll be confused or put off or something. Do you always ask to take someone's photo or do you just snap your camera and keep going?

    me

mostly i don’t ask, but i’ve been starting to do so more recently. when i first got into street shooting i remember asking this burly looking tattooed chap if i could take his photo when i was working up north. he said no and looked at me like i was weirdo, so i was kinda put off doing it that way for a while. it’s only recently i’ve tried again and realised that most people don’t mind at all and are usually quite flattered, i just got bad luck on my first go! doing candid shots i do usually just snap and go. if i’m seen i’ll maybe smile or do a thumbs up just to show i’m friendly but no one’s ever gotten pissed off or asked me what i’m doing. mostly they will just look confused, but hey there’s no harm there! thanks so much for the compliment!

Love your blog! I have been wanting to take my camera out and just shoot candid street photos for a long time now! But my shyness gets in the way. Any-who, love your work! Hopefully soon I will get the guts and get out there and take candid photos!

    me

shooting street can be intimidating. i still hesitate to point my camera at a lot of situations. some days i feel up to it and others not, but if you’re able to take your camera with you as much as possible (if not all the time) then at least when you feel up to it you’ll be ready. i’ve recently started shooting non-candid street portraits and found that a bit less daunting as you can at least explain why you want to take the photo (good light, interesting clothing, etc). if i do a couple of those at the beginning of a session it usually gives me the buzz/bravado to do the more candid style shots. hope that helps and thanks for the kind words! :-)

Walking between jobs yesterday I was drawn to this gentleman appreciating the Guards Division Memorial. Noticing his patriotic attire I asked if I could take his photo. I told him to look at the clock over at the Horse Guards Parade but before I could take it he said “a little bit of history for you. On the 30th January in 1649 towards the end of English Civil War King Charles was brought through here to the Banqueting House where he was executed at 2pm. When they had the good sense to restore the monarchy in 1660, Charles II requested that the two of the clock be marked black. This was done to commemorate his father’s death”.

Anyway, it struck me how rarely the people who live in England mark the occasion of St George’s Day when compared with the those in other countries and their respective National Days. It’s a shame that the idiots of the EDL, BNP et al have appropriated the flag and ‘english patriotism’ and tarnished it for political ends. I’m in no way a massive patriot but I would much rather we celebrated it in the sort of measured and slightly eccentric way that this gentleman did, rather than forget it or leave it to the racists.
